Gallery Night Update
The Independent News office (124 S. Palafox) is bustling with last-minute preparations for tonight's Gallery Night festivities kicking off at 5 p.m.
The folks from Mr. Margarita have set up three margarita machines--strawberry, lime and "jacked-up" lime. We're handing out the frozen potent potables to the masses for free--just as soon as the concoction freezes.
University of West Florida visual artists Julie Najjar and Tressie Scarborough are setting up their artwork on IN's lime-green walls. In honor of our "argh, matey" pirate theme, the two plan to dress up as buccaneers--think more Mary Read and Anne Bonny and less Blackbeard and "Calico" Jack Rockham.
Scarborough has three new pieces that particularly stand out. It's her reaction to a UWF professor saying that she's "not girly enough." The paintings evoke a Toulouse-Lautrec, absinthe-fueled journey to 1889 Paris featuring female models (with boyish features). Scarborough says it's her way of challenging traditional gender roles and identity.
