Did Cameron Diaz open 'The Box' at Comic-Con?

Richard Kelly, the filmmaker behind the cult hit "Donnie Darko," unveiled a new trailer for his made-in-Massachusetts flick "The Box" at a star-studded Comic-Con panel discussion in San Diego on Friday, July 24.

Cameron Diaz, who stars alongside James Marsden, shared the stage with Kelly and reportedly spilled an important plot point to the masses. Of course, it was an off-the-cuff statement that may have been taken completely out of context.

Spoiler? Perhaps.

"The Box" follows a suburban couple with a young child who receive a simple wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences.

A mysterious stranger, played by Frank Langella, delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. But, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world ... someone they don't know.

Local filming locations for "The Box" include the Boston Public Library, Castle Hill in Ipswich and South Boston. The release date has been moved to Friday, Oct. 30 to coincide with Halloween.

Meanwhile, the film's poster continues to generate buzz online. Similar to the promos for "The Surrogates" and "Shutter Island," Diaz is working the "something wicked this way comes" glare that seems to be all the rage among film protagonists featured on posters.

Kelly comments on the poster via his MySpace blog here: "I think the poster captures the suspense and conflict in the film, and at the same time has a bit of a classic Hitchcockian vibe to it."

Lucky for us, Diaz is slotted to make a return trip to Boston to film the spy flick "Wichita" with A-lister Tom Cruise in September.
