Ben Affleck's 'The Town' is taking over the town

Just in case you haven't noticed, there's a whole lot of filming going on in Boston.

While Cambridge homeboy Ben Affleck filmed scenes for his blue-collar heist flick "The Town" at Twin City Plaza on the Cambridge-Somerville line located at 22 McGrath Highway on Tuesday, Sept. 29, crews have separated into two units to film scenes in a slew of locales including Somerville and the North End over the next few weeks.

For example, unit No. 1 of "The Town" is filming at the Somerville Hospital located at 230 Highland Ave. on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4.

Also on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4 from 6 a.m.-8 p.m., unit No. 2 is scheduled to film on the Charlestown Bridge including Commercial St. from Henchman to N. Washington.

Many of the larger made-in-Boston films, like Mel Gibson's "Edge of Darkness" and "Surrogates" with Bruce Willis, had two units working at the same time.

On Thursday, Oct. 1, there's filming slotted in front of the Copley Square fountain near Trinity Church which overlaps with unit No. 2 filming from 6 a.m.-8 p.m. on at N Bennett, Tileston, Wiggin and Unity streets in the North End.

Confused? Don't fret.

Film requires hours of b-roll footage which involves a lot of exterior shots that may or may not involve actors. The Charlestown Bridge shot, for example, could involve a stunt double or doubles driving a get-away car while crews film a scene with a principal actor at the Somerville Hospital.

Unit No. 2 footage in the North End includes scenes slotted for the Pizzeria Regina on Thacher Street and New Spin Laundry on Salem Street which will be transformed into one of the banks under siege. Unit No. 1 is scheduled to return to the same locations to film later in the month.

So yes, Affleck's "The Town" is officially taking over the town. Click here for the latest.

Thanks for all the info. So far, this crew have been great guests to the North End neighborhood and beyond. Their props people especially have been coming into the store I work at in Cambridge. People who delivered props to the set say Affleck feeds his crew VERY well. It's nice to know he's not a cheapskate :)

Yes, compared to the other crews filming in Boston (ahem, Zookeeper), the people working with "The Town" have been extremely respectful of the locals and the fact that they're setting up a velvet rope in the middle of our neighborhoods.
