Drew Barrymore, heading to town 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9 to promote her directorial debut following a crew of roller-derby hellraisers in the indie flick "Whip It," will meet with local teens and college students at the Artists for Humanity EpiCenter located at 100 West Second Street in South Boston.Barrymore, who also stars in the flick as "Smashley Simpson," will hand out posters from the film and take photos with fans. Inspired by "Whip It," girls from area teams will also be present. Grand prize winners will receive tickets to that evening’s screening of the film, followed by a Q&A with the actor.
"Whip It" stars "Juno's" Ellen Page as "Bliss Cavendar" turned "Babe Ruthless," a rebellious Texas teen who throws in her small town beauty pageant crown for the rowdy world of roller derby. Marcia Gay Harden plays Bliss’ disapproving mother, while Barrymore, Kristen "Maggie Mayhem" Wiig and Juliette "Iron Maven" Lewis play roller-derby stars.
